Biogas, biomethane and other renewable gases

Implementation of projects, authorisation, and emerging regulatory frameworks.

Renewable gases, such as biogas, biomethane and green hydrogen, are essential for achieving climate neutrality by 2050, as they allow the decarbonisation of hard-to-electrify sectors and strengthen energy security. Spain has enormous potential for their production and deployment, opening new opportunities for investment and industrial development.

At SD Verdia we offer specialised advice to advance projects related to the production, transmission, distribution, and supply of renewable gases. Our multidisciplinary team combines regulatory, administrative, contractual, and financial expertise, providing legal solutions that support clients from the definition of the business model to the construction and operation of the facilities.

Frequently asked questions about biogas and biomethane

We answer the most common questions about biogas, biomethane and renewable gases.

What is the difference between biogas and biomethane?

Biogas is obtained from the decomposition of organic waste (slurry, agri-food waste, sewage sludge, etc.). Biomethane is biogas purified to a quality equivalent to natural gas, which allows it to be injected into the gas grid or used as a fuel. Both are renewable gases that contribute to decarbonisation and the circular economy.

What regulations govern biogas and biomethane in Spain?

The main framework is Royal Decree 376/2022, of 17 May, which sets the sustainability criteria and creates the guarantee-of-origin system for renewable gases, developed by subsequent legislation (including Order TED/728/2024, which defines biogas and biomethane and sets up their traceability). It is complemented by the Biogas Roadmap and by EU legislation (Directive (EU) 2018/2001 and the REPowerEU plan).

What is required to inject biomethane into the gas grid?

In addition to the project authorisations, injection requires compliance with the technical specifications for gas quality and measurement and following the grid-connection procedure regulated by the CNMC (established in 2024 and extended in 2025 to other renewable gases). Many environmental, waste-management and digestate-use permits fall to the regional governments, so procedures vary depending on the project's location.

What role do guarantees of origin play and what opportunities does biomethane open up?

Guarantees of origin officially certify that the gas is of renewable origin and evidence its traceability, adding value to the project. The drive for biomethane —with growing usage targets and new support measures in progress— opens up opportunities for producers, waste managers and investors, especially when combined with other renewable generation solutions.
